What makes an apology actually work?

Research by Dr. Roy Lewicki at Ohio State University identified the components of effective apologies. The most powerful apologies include acknowledgment of the wrongdoing, accepting responsibility, expressing remorse, and offering repair. Crucially, not all elements are equal — accepting responsibility matters most.

Failed apologies often contain subtle deflections: “I'm sorry you felt that way,” “I'm sorry if I hurt you,” or “I was stressed.” These phrases shift responsibility back to the recipient or explain away behavior, which makes apologies land worse than saying nothing at all.

The Apology Checker evaluates your apology against three core dimensions — Accountability, Empathy, and Remedy — and gives you specific, actionable feedback so your apology has the best chance of healing the relationship.
